Biography

Born and raised in Montreal, Johanne Richer is a visual artist who is deeply involved in her community and her artistic practice. She has accumulated a wealth of experience and knowledge in various areas of dance, which serves as a guide in the creation of her works. As a figurative painter who uses oil as her primary medium, she showcases freedom in movement and in brush strokes as a narrative that acts as a backdrop to the techniques, postures, and aesthetics of dance. She intertwines creativity, spontaneity, and technicality, freedom and restraint, in order to highlight the subtleties of pose and dynamism. Johanne exhibits frequently in Quebec, Ontario, and New Brunswick. She has more than 100 exhibitions to her credit. These include selective exhibitions, group exhibitions, solo exhibitions, and exhibitions at various events related to the world of dance. She was a co-presenter of the visual arts segment during the ArohaFest Spring & Diwali festival editions which were co-presentations by the National Arts Centre, Aroha Fine Arts, and the Shenkman Arts Centre. Her work, her home studio, and her commentary were featured as part of a local televised docuseries, “Au coeur des artistes”, produced by the Fédérations des aînés et retraités francophones de l’Ontario. From 2018 to 2020, her works were also published in ‘L’agenda Plumes et Pinceaux”, by “Éditions Zyeudor”. Last February, as part of “The Art of Movement Artist Talk”, she shared her passion for dance; while offering a glimpse into her creative process and the techniques she uses in her work.

Finally, Johanne is a member of Arteast Ottawa, Art Lending of Ottawa, Canadian Artist Association, and at the Chenail Culturel Center. She also sits on the board, as an administrator, at the Chenail Cultural Center in Hawkesbury, ON.

Through her artistry, she translates what she feels, she dances on her canvases, and conveys what inspires her most.
