I have always been fascinated by the human eye. Regardless of how clichéd it may be to say that the eyes are the windows of the soul, it is an indubitable fact that we reveal most of ourselves through them. The inspiration of most of my paintings is reflected by this fascination. Even the act of closing our eyes can sometimes show more than it hides.
Through the eye I endeavour to give insight into the emotional make-up of the subject being portrayed on the canvas. By extension, my interest is also piqued by the setting.
This does not preclude my interest in form and body language as a means to transmit the idea of emotionwhich I hope the viewer can internalize and make their own.
The constant shift of colour and texture that occurs with each brush stroke often completely changes the concept or mood originally conceived for a canvas. This, for me, is one of the joys of painting with oils. Each piece is its own creation, beginning with an idea of mine and growing and metamorphosingat will.
